Brazil approves new iron ore port
(Minews) - Brazil’s waterways agency, Antaq, has authorized construction of the Porto Sul port in the country’s northeastern Bahia state. The port includes a state-owned terminal as well as a private terminal to be built by local miner Bahia Mineração (Bamin) to handle its iron ore exports. The company has been given permission to build the port in the city of Ilhéus, with a handling capacity of about 25 million tpy of iron ore.

The Bahia government plans to attract private companies to develop the state-owned terminal, in which it would maintain a minority interest.

Porto Sul has been considered by several Brazilian miners for the export of their future iron ore production, including Bahmex, Honbridge and Cabral Resources.
