(Minews) - Iran has produced over 6.8 million tons of steel in the first five months of 2015, despite cruel economic sanctions against the country and its steel industry.

According to the latest report released by the World Steel Association, Iran's total steel production during the first five months of 2015 amounted to 6.82 million tons, showing a growth of 3% compared with the same period last year.

In the first five months of 2014, Iran had produced 6.608 million tons of steel, according to the report.

Iran's total steel production in 2014 also witnessed a 6.6 percent increase compared to a year earlier, in which the figure had jumped by 6 percent.

Earlier in February, a master plan devised by the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) was released, showing that the country is planning to raise its capacity to produce steel by 11.6 million tons with the collaboration of a number of domestic and foreign companies.

Iran is the biggest steel producer in the Middle East and North Africa region. The country's main steel production facilities are located in Isfahan and Khuzestan provinces.
