Politics shapes Iranian economy, IMIDRO chief says

(Minews) - Mehdi Karbasian, the deputy minister of industry, mines and trade, says backing up from seven steel projects in southern Iran is not possible, although they are not economically justified.

“The only thing that can be done about them is to amend them,” said Karbasian, who is also the head of the Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO).

He was commenting on the steel projects which were kicked off during the Ahmadinejad administration.

In China, if they start a 20-million-ton project, they would stop it if it is going to give them an output of 3 million, but in Iran such projects are carried out anyway, he expressed pity.

The projects come with no necessary infrastructures such as water, electricity, railroad, etc., he explained.

“Sometimes a political motivation overrules expert economic calculations. These seven projects are an example of this kind of decision-making.”
